Week of January 18-22, 2016

CTP4 will be administered this week.
Please make sure your child eats a healthy breakfast each morning, brings a water bottle and snack with them to school, and gets adequate sleep each night!  The only homework given this week will be reading.

Where We Are in Place and Time
Central Idea:
Immigration influences new and existing groups.

Lines of Inquiry:

·         Acceptance and understanding between cultures

Teacher Questions and Key Concepts:
What effect did the native and settler encounters have on their population? (change)
What impact can immigration have on a culture? (perspective)
Why does conflict arise between different cultures? (causation)



Daily 5/CAFE  11:00-12:30
Reading: Daily 5/ CAFE
Daily 5/CAFE:  This week, students will continue to identify the  main idea in a variety of texts, including both fiction and nonfiction. The main idea is what the story, text, or passage is mostly telling about.  Supporting details help make the main idea clear.  Due to testing, we will not run a normal Daily 5 schedule this week.  

BOOK GENRE STUDY-Historical Fiction-Due January 29th!

Please follow the paragraph guidelines located on the link below.  Students MUST follow the writing process (plan, rough draft, revise, edit, neat/final copy).

VOCABULARY: Students will not have assigned Wordly Wise words this week. Students may review the lessons taught thus far on Quizlet at home.
Writing: VOICES
1:30-2:00
VOICES: Students will continue the 6+1 Traits of Writing. This is referred to as VOICES: voice, organization, ideas, conventions, expanded vocabulary, and sentence fluency.
3rd grade: Students will continue reviewing the steps of the writing process as a group. This week in the writing center, students will continue their narrative prompt: How I Spent My Winter Vacation. This prompt includes holidays they have celebrated, places they went to, people they visited, and any fun things they did. Students will focus on revising and editing their “sloppy copy” and then begin creating their final draft on notebook paper in cursive. Students will use writing and editing checklists to help guide the editing process. Students will continue conferencing with a teacher.
The final draft of this prompt is due Jan.22nd.

4th grade:   Students will students continue their narrative prompt: How I Spent My Winter Vacation. This prompt include holidays they have celebrated, places they went to, people they visited, and any fun things they did. Students are expected to follow the steps of the writing process for all pieces. Students will be focusing on their word choices and work on their sentence fluency. They are encouraged to avoid using the word said, and use more words that help describe emotions.
The final draft of this prompt is due Jan.22nd.
When editing, students will be checking for proper use of capitalization, punctuation (including commas), and spelling.  We will be using proper editing marks when editing their writing. Each student will keep a editing reference guide in their home binders for them to use if needed for homework. You can also use the one located below:

Where We Are in Place and Time:  Students will complete a formative assessment for Line 1:  Changes in native cultures.
Tuesday
.Where We Are in Place and Time:  Students will explore changes that can happen to a culture over time. Students will participate in a powerpoint and cloze activity to check for their comprehension.
Wednesday
Where We Are in Place and Time:   In small groups, students will research information about the aboriginal culture before and after immigrants arrived.
Thursday
Where We Are in Place and Time:  In small groups, students will create a small presentation of the aboriginal culture.  Students will cover before and after encounter took place.
Friday
Where We Are in Place and Time:  Students will view a cultural film that correlates with our Unit of Inquiry.
