Daily 5/CAFE: This week, students will spend the first half of the week learning about main idea. The main idea is what the story, text, or passage is mostly telling about. Supporting details help make the main idea clear. We will spend the second half of the week reviewing reading concepts in preparation for the upcoming CTP4 testing. Students will review analogical and categorical reasoning as well as auditory reading comprehension.

VOCABULARY: Students will continue to work with their Wordly Wise words this week. We encourage you to use Quizlet at home to review your weekly Wordly Wise words. Wordly Wise tests will be given this Friday!

Writing: VOICES

VOICES: Students will continue the 6+1 Traits of Writing. This is referred to as VOICES: voice, organization, ideas, conventions, expanded vocabulary, and sentence fluency. This week we will continue our focus lesson on Expanding Vocabulary (Word Choice). Students will learn and practice how to use words to clarify an idea, create a mental picture for the reader, and to make the writing sound appealing to the ear. Word Choice is all about the rich, colorful, precise language that communicates in a way that is not only functional, but also in a way that moves and enlightens the reader. Students will work in groups to give feedback to one another about their use of word choice in their writing piece.
Students will be reviewing writing mechanics (spelling and usage), organization, author’s purpose/focus, using supporting details, and writing style and craft (sentence structures) to prepare for the CTP4.
3rd grade: Students will continue reviewing the steps of the writing process as a group. This week in the writing center, students will continue their narrative prompt: How I Spent My Winter Vacation. This prompt includes holidays they have celebrated, places they went to, people they visited, and any fun things they did. Students will focus creating a “sloppy copy” on a “hamburger” template using the information that they have included on their plan. Students will focus on their word choices, and work on their sentence fluency and vocabulary.

4th grade: Students will students continue their narrative prompt: How I Spent My Winter Vacation. This prompt include holidays they have celebrated, places they went to, people they visited, and any fun things they did. Students are expected to follow the steps of the writing process for all pieces. Students will be focusing on their word choices and work on their sentence fluency. They are encouraged to avoid using the word said, and use more words that help describe emotions.
When editing, students will be checking for proper use of capitalization, punctuation (including commas), and spelling. We will be using proper editing marks when editing their writing. Each student will keep a editing reference guide in their home binders for them to use if needed for homework. You can also use the one located below:

GRAMMAR:
Students will be reviewing their parts of speech to prepare for the CTP4 test.
Students will continue to practice identifying various verbs in a sentence. Verbs are words are expressing action, something that a person, animal, force of nature, or thing can do.Verbs are a necessary component of all sentences. Students will review main, helping, and linking verbs. Students will begin to focus on verb tenses: past (danced), present (is dancing), future (will dance).

WORDS THEIR WAY SPELLING:
Students will continue to work with their word sorts this week. We will have our spelling test on Friday, January 15th! Students may practice these words during Word Work as well as homework. Students are responsible for correct spelling and knowing their word patterns.

Students will explore the characteristics of polyhedrons and construct a polyhedron based on a given description.
(Students are now focusing on becoming fluent with their multiplication facts. Nightly practice is encouraged if mastery is not yet achieved. Weekly timed quizzes will be each Friday. Personal goals will be set after each quiz. Please encourage your child to reach their goal!)
