Week of February 1st - 5th



Program of Inquiry
Where We Are in Place and Time
Central Idea:
Immigration influences new and existing groups.
Lines of Inquiry:

Reading: Daily 5/ CAFE
Daily 5/CAFE:  This week, students will identify cause and effect relationships within a variety of texts.  Students will be able to identify the relationship between two or more events in which one event brings about another. The event that happens first is the cause; the one that follows is the effect.  This will further their reading comprehension skills.  As we conference with students this week, we will focus on identifying these relationships within their Good Fit books, as well as complete activities in which cause and effect is identified and justified.

VOCABULARY: Students will be tested on their Wordly Wise words this week. Students are encouraged to study their Wordly Wise vocabulary words at home for homework.  Students may use their books, or they can use Quizlet for practice.

Writing: VOICES
1:30-2:00
VOICES: Students will continue the 6+1 Traits of Writing. This is referred to as VOICES: voice, organization, ideas, conventions, expanded vocabulary, and sentence fluency.
3rd grade: Students will continue reviewing the steps of the writing process as a group. This week in the writing center, students will continue to work on their narrative prompt: Encounter. For this prompt, students will decide if they are a Native American or an English settler (immigrant.) Students will include details about the first time they met the other group of people. They will include what they thought about the others, and if it were a peaceful encounter or if they had conflict. Students will focus on creating their sloppy copy, and then begin to revise and edit. . Students will continue conferencing with a teacher.


4th grade:   Students will continue their narrative prompt: Encounter. For this prompt, students will decide if they are a Native American or an English settler (immigrant.) Students will include details about the first time they met the other group of people. They will include what they thought about the others, and if it were a peaceful encounter or if they had conflict. Students are expected to follow the steps of the writing process for all pieces. Students will be focusing on their word choices and work on their sentence fluency. They are encouraged to avoid using the word said, and use more words that help describe emotions.

When editing, students will be checking for proper use of capitalization, punctuation (including commas), and spelling.  We will be using proper editing marks when editing their writing. Each student will keep a editing reference guide in their home binders for them to use if needed for homework. You can also use the one located below:

GRAMMAR: Students will continue to practice changing the simple tense of the verb within a sentence. The tense of a verb is determined by when the action took place. The three tenses are:
The Past Tense
The Present Tense
The Future Tense

Students will begin to identify and use irregular past tense verbs. These verbs do not follow a specific rule when changing to past tense. Sometimes these verbs stay the same or the spelling may change altogether.

Examples of Tenses
Here are some examples of simple tense verbs:
  • I walked to work. (The verb walked is in the past tense.)
  • I walk to work. (The verb walk is in the present tense.)
  • I will walk to work. (The verb will walk is in the future tense.)
Irregular verbs include words such as:
  • see-saw
  • eat-ate
  • drive-drove
  • fly-flew

WORDS THEIR WAY SPELLING:
Students will be tested on their words this Friday, February 5th.  Students are responsible for knowing the sorting rules as well as the correct spelling for each word.  Your child’s list of words can be located in their agenda.  Please complete three DIFFERENT spelling jobs for homework.  Spelling HW is due on Friday.

Student will review basic ideas of probability, including fairness and expected results.  Additionally, students will apply their application of fractions to spinners.

Student will review all fraction concepts learned throughout Unit 7.  We will review concepts as a class and then begin assessing fraction skills.
Wednesday
Student will continue their assessment on fractions.  Once completed, we will go over the assessment as a class in an effort to clarify any questions.  
Thursday
Student will review perimeter concepts and solve problems in which the perimeter is identified.

Friday
Student will review basic area concepts.  Students will practice estimating the area of polygons by counting unit square.  Students will work collaboratively to create a visual “Minecraft” town in which they calculate the area and perimeter of each building within the town.

Monday
Where We Are in Place and Time: Students will watch “Encounter” and “The Drummer Boy” film clips and discuss questions about how the Aboriginals and English immigrants perceive one another.
Tuesday
Where We Are in Place and Time:  Students will explore other native cultures and discuss conflict between the natives and immigrants.
Wednesday
Where We Are in Place and Time:   Students will use an interactive web map to explore immigration patterns in the United States.
Thursday
Where We Are in Place and Time:  Students will take a virtual tour of Ellis Island and discuss data collected on immigration over time.
Friday
Where We Are in Place and Time:  Students explore what life was like for a US immigrant in the 1800-1900s and take a “citizenship test.”

Daily 5/CAFE:  This week, students will identify facts and opinions within a variety of texts.  Students will be able to support facts with concrete evidence, and know that opinions are the way someone feels.  During our reading conferences, we will meet with students to identify facts and opinions within their Good Fit books.  Students will be assessed on this reading skill on Friday.

Student will compare fractions by ordering sets of fractions.  Students will compare fractions with both like and unlike denominators.  Additionally, students will compare fractions using <, >, or =.

Student will find the whole, or the ONE for a given set of fractions.  For example:  if OOO = ½, the whole would be OOOOOO.  Students will use pattern blocks and counters to help visualize these problems.

Wednesday
Student will begin the first of a two-day lesson in which they apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction by a whole number.  Students will use visual fraction models to multiply a unit fraction by a whole number.

Student will continue multiplying fractions by whole numbers.
