Writing: VOICES
1:30-2:00
|
VOICES: Students will continue the 6+1 Traits of Writing. This is referred to as VOICES: voice, organization, ideas, conventions, expanded vocabulary, and sentence fluency. This week we will continue focusing on Conventions. Conventions refer to the mechanical correctness of the piece—spelling, indentation, grammar and usage, punctuation, and use of capitals. We will continue to review proper use of commas in our writing and follow the 6 comma rules. Students will continue practicing each rule separately, and then progress into multiple comma uses within a sentence. We will continue to work with rules 1, 2, and 6 this week and then begin reviewing and practicing all the comma rules together.
The Comma Rules:
Students will continue to organize their ideas and details for their free write. Students should begin their sloppy copy (rough draft) and continue to conference with a teacher. Once a sloppy copy is completed, students will use a checklist to help them revise and edit. When editing, students will be checking for proper use of capitalization, punctuation (including commas), and spelling. We will be using proper editing marks when editing their writing. We will be practicing as a group and individually how to spot mistakes and mark them appropriately. Each student will keep a editing reference guide in their home binders for them to use if needed for homework. You can also use the one located below:
You can use these resources at home:
GRAMMAR: Students will continue exploring pronouns. Students will learn that pronouns such as he, she, it, and they, are words that take the place of a noun. Students will practice locating the antecedent and replacing the antecedent with a pronoun. Students will begin looking and singular and plural pronouns.

Fourth grade will review the formation letters in cursive that they are constantly forming and/or connecting incorrectly. Fourth grade students are expected to write in cursive on all assignments unless otherwise indicated. For an animated demonstration of each letter, please use the links below:
WORDS THEIR WAY SPELLING:
