Students will review introduced to the CAFE fluency strategy of “Use punctuation to enhance phrasing and prosody” (end marks, commas, etc) Students will be assessed on this strategy this week. Through this strategy, readers are actively involved in asking questions before, during, and after reading a selection, thus increasing their comprehension of the material. During student conferences this week, teachers will check their book boxes to ensure IPICK Good Fit books are present, listen for punctuation phrasing while reading, and ask/answer questions throughout the reading process.

Writing: VOICES
1:30-2:00
|
VOICES: Students will continue the 6+1 Traits of Writing. This is referred to as VOICES: voice, organization, ideas, conventions, expanded vocabulary, and sentence fluency. This week we will continue focusing on Conventions. Conventions refer to the mechanical correctness of the piece—spelling, indentation, grammar and usage, punctuation, and use of capitals. We will continue to review proper use of commas in our writing and follow the 6 comma rules. Students will continue practicing each rule separately, and then progress into multiple comma uses within a sentence. We will continue with rules 4, 5, and begin focusing on 3.
The Comma Rules:
Students will continue to organize their ideas and details for their free write. Students should begin their sloppy copy (rough draft) and continue to conference with a teacher. Once a sloppy copy is completed, students will use a checklist to help them revise and edit. When editing, students will be checking for proper use of capitalization, punctuation (including commas), and spelling.
You can use these resources at home:
GRAMMAR: Students will review with a partner all of the different noun types practiced this year. (Singular/Plural, Common/Proper, Concrete/Abstract, and Possessive) Students will take a noun assessment covering these noun types. Students may use the variety of activities at http://www.turtlediary.com/kids-games/ela/nouns.html to review at home.
HANDWRITING: Third grade will continue practicing the formation of their cursive letters. Their names should be written in cursive on all of their papers. Fourth grade will review the formation letters in cursive that they are constantly forming and/or connecting incorrectly. Fourth grade students are expected to write in cursive on all assignments unless otherwise indicated. For an animated demonstration of each letter, please use the links below:
