Daily 5/CAFE  11:00-12:30
Reading: Daily 5/ CAFE
Daily 5/CAFE:  This week, students will explore the differences between homophones, homographs, and homonyms.  While these words are often confusing, this is an introductory skill for the 3rd/4th grade level.

HOMONYMS are words that sound alike but have different meanings, and may be spelled the same or different. Example: fair (county fair) fair (reasonable) pear (fruit) pair (couple).

HOMOPHONES are a type of homonym that also sound alike and have different meanings, but have different spellings. Example:  pear (fruit) pair (couple).

HOMOGRAPHS are words that are spelled the same but have different meanings. Some homographs may be pronounced differently, but not always. Example: lie (untruth) and lie (prone), tear (in the eye) and  tear (rip).

WORDS THAT BOTH SOUND THE SAME AND ARE SPELLED THE SAME are both homonyms (same sound) and homographs (same spelling). Example: lie (untruth) and lie (prone); fair (county fair), fair (reasonable).

Students will focus on completing their sloppy copy, and then begin to revise and edit.Students will continue conferencing with a teacher.

4th grade:   Students will continue their narrative prompt: Encounter. For this prompt, students will decide if they are a Native American or an English settler (immigrant.) Students will include details about the first time they met the other group of people. They will include what they thought about the others, and if it were a peaceful encounter or if they had conflict. Students are expected to follow the steps of the writing process for all pieces. Students will be focusing on their word choices and work on their sentence fluency. They are encouraged to avoid using the word said, and use more words that help describe emotions.

When editing, students will be checking for proper use of capitalization, punctuation (including commas), and spelling.  We will be using proper editing marks when editing their writing. Each student will keep a editing reference guide in their home binders for them to use if needed for homework. You can also use the one located below:

You can also use these resources at home:

GRAMMAR: Students will review identifying adjectives in a sentence and using adjectives to describe nouns in their own writing. Adjectives are are words that describe or modify other words. They can identify or quantify another person or thing in the sentence.Adjectives are usually positioned before the noun or the pronoun that they modify. Adjectives tell how many, what kind, or which one.
For example:
Dan decided that the fuzzy green bread would make an unappetizing sandwich.
What kind of bread? Fuzzy and green! What kind of sandwich? Unappetizing!
Students will also begin working with proper adjectives. These adjectives come from  from proper nouns.  Proper nouns are nouns that name specific people, places, things, or ideas. Think of proper as meaning specific. Example: Proper Noun : America
Proper Adjective: American
