Reading: Daily 5/ CAFE
Daily 5/CAFE:  This week, students will refer explicitly to the text to locate correct answers.  This will ensure accuracy when answering questions about nonfiction text.  We will work with students to use strategies for answering questions.  During our reading conferences, teachers will review correct answers to reading passages.  Additionally, we will focus on auditory comprehension.  With stories read aloud, students will enhance their vocabulary, explicit information, and practice listening for understanding.

This week students will continue to explore informational/expository writing. This is a type of nonfiction writing that conveys information about something, which means it is factual. Students will be using this writing assignment to help expand their knowledge about our central idea: The efficiency of a government depends on its structure and function.

Students will write to the following:

Select 2 types of government. This could be international, national, state, or local. Tell information about what each government looks like (form) (or is structured), how each government works (function), any individuals that hold leadership offices/positions, and any documents that the government uses. Compare/contrast these two governments.
Students will include several non-fiction text features in their writing, such as a title, headings for each paragraph, and bold/italic text (to help emphasize important vocabulary). Students will also include a table of contents and a glossary.
Students will discuss and model this type of writing as a group. Research time and materials will be provided to help students gather the necessary facts to include in their writing.
Students will continue to conference with a teacher throughout the writing process.
Writing assignment due Thursday, March 24th.

Watch this video about informative writing:

When editing, students will be checking for proper use of capitalization, punctuation (including commas), and spelling.  We will be using proper editing marks when editing their writing. Each student will keep a editing reference guide in their home binders for them to use if needed for homework. You can also use the one located below:

You can also use these resources at home:

GRAMMAR: Students will continue exploring adverbs. Students will review frequency and negative adverbs and begin working with intensifiers. Students will also identify and use adverbs that modify other adverbs and adjectives.
An adverb tells us when, where, how, in what manner, or to what extent an action is performed. An adverb is typically used to modify a verb, but an adverb can also modify an adjective or another adverb.

Here are some examples of adverbs modifying verbs:
  • When: He ran yesterday.
  • Where: He ran here.
  • How: He ran quickly.
  • In what manner: He ran barefoot.
  • To what extent: He ran fastest.
Intensifier Examples:
I am very happy.
The film was quite good.
You did that rather well.
Must you leave so soon?
