How We Express Ourselves
Central Idea: Our voice is an important form of expression to communicate different ideas, emotions, and feelings.

Daily 5/CAFE: This week, we will wrap our work on characterization and character traits. Students were able to classify and identify characters in a story based on their actions within the text. We will introduce the CAFE comprehension strategy of Determine and Analyze the Author’s Purpose. Readers will become aware of why texts are written (to inform, persuade, and entertain). During student conferences this week, teachers will work with students to identify the author’s purpose.

Writing: VOICES

VOICES: Students will continue the 6+1 Traits of Writing. This is referred to as VOICES: voice, organization, ideas, conventions, expanded vocabulary, and sentence fluency. This week we will continue to practice the sentence fluency trait and voice trait. The sentence fluency trait includes how to create a variety of sentences that can be read smoothly and rhythmically. It can be a challenge to come up with sentences of different lengths, beginning in different ways, and that also have a pleasing sound. The voice trait focused on how to express yourself using emotions that fit the purpose for writing. Students will try out new ways of expressing themselves in order to actively engage the reader. We will be reading How Are You Peeling in class to model various emotions. Students will also being using words to replace “said” in their writing that help to express emotion.

Students will continue to practice these comma rules as a class during the next few weeks.
The Comma Rules:
3rd grade: Students will continue reviewing the steps of the writing process as a group. Students will continue to practice multiple ways to hook a reader in the beginning of a story. Students will be creating hook sentences for various topics during their center time.
Hook Types:
Students will be reviewing sentence variety and formation, as well as how to create a decent paragraph. We will model paragraph formation using the “hamburger method.”

4th grade: Students will then begin a new writing piece to work on during centers. The topic for this piece is student’s choice. Students are expected to follow the steps of the writing process for all pieces. When editing, students will be checking for proper use of capitalization, punctuation (including commas), and spelling. We will be using proper editing marks when editing their writing. Each student will keep a editing reference guide in their home binders for them to use if needed for homework. You can also use the one located below:

GRAMMAR: Students will continue working with possessive pronouns. Possessive pronouns include mine, yours, his, hers, its, ours, and theirs. For example: "This phone is mine.” We will begin a review of identifying pronouns and antecedents, singular and plural, subject and object, and possessive pronouns to help prepare for their assessment next week.

Students will receive to a new spelling sort this week. Students may practice these words during Word Work as well as homework. Students are responsible for correct spelling and knowing their word patterns.

Monday

Students will model the tenths and hundredths place with base-10 blocks and use a grid to represent the number.
(At this point, students should be fluent with all addition and subtraction facts through 12. Nightly practice is encouraged if mastery is not yet achieved. Weekly timed quizzes will be each Friday. Personal goals will be set after each quiz. Please encourage your child to reach their goal!)

Students will use decimal notation for metric measurement and to convert between centimeters and meters.

Students will be introduced to the thousandths place with millimeters. Students will interpret data from a map.
