How We Express Ourselves
Central Idea: Our voice is an important form of expression to communicate different ideas, emotions, and feelings.

Reading: Daily 5/ CAFE
Daily 5/CAFE:  This week, we will continue the CAFE comprehension strategy of Determine and Analyze the Author’s Purpose.  Readers will become aware of why texts are written (to inform, persuade, and entertain).   During student conferences this week, teachers will work with students to identify the author’s purpose of their Good Fit books.

  • 4th graders:  Students will begin Lesson 3 in Book 4. Word list this week: active, astound, attend, cherish, contract, eager, expose, grace, impose, modest, parallel, paralyze, pessimist, recite, respond
  • 3rd graders: Students will begin Lesson 8 in Book 3 . Word list this week: contain, digest, finicky, habit, hinge, marsh, nursery, rely, spine, thrive
Writing: VOICES
1:30-2:00
VOICES: Students will continue the 6+1 Traits of Writing. This is referred to as VOICES: voice, organization, ideas, conventions, expanded vocabulary, and sentence fluency. This week we will continue to practice the voice trait. The voice trait focused on how to express yourself using emotions that fit the purpose for writing. Students will try out new ways of expressing themselves in order to actively engage the reader.We will continue practicing dialogue to help give the characters a voice. Students will also being using words to replace “said” in their writing that help to express emotion.

Students will continue to practice these comma rules as a class during the next few weeks.

The Comma Rules:
  1. Use a comma before or after a quotation in a sentence.
  2. Use a comma after common introductory words in a sentence (however, clearly well, finally.etc.)
  3. Use a comma before a conjunction when connecting two independent clauses. (Example: I love summertime, but I miss the snow.)
  4. Use a comma to separate a city and state and the day from the year in a date.
  5. Use a comma to separate things in a series (listing 3 or more things.)
  6. Use a comma to introduce someone in a sentence.

3rd grade: Students will continue reviewing the steps of the writing process as a group.Students will be practicing sentence variety and formation, and following steps to creating a decent paragraph. We will continue to model paragraph formation using the “hamburger method”. This week in the writing center, students will create a plan for a given prompt and write an introduction and concluding paragraph.

4th grade:   Students will continue working on their  writing during centers. The topic for this piece is student’s choice. Students are expected to follow the steps of the writing process for all pieces. Students will be practicing adding dialogue to their story to help give the characters a voice. They are encouraged to avoid using the word said, and use more words that help describe emotions.
When editing, students will be checking for proper use of capitalization, punctuation (including commas), and spelling.  We will be using proper editing marks when editing their writing. Each student will keep a editing reference guide in their home binders for them to use if needed for homework. You can also use the one located below:

GRAMMAR: Students will review and practice identifying action verbs in a sentence. Verbs are words are expressing action, something that a person, animal, force of nature, or thing can do.Verbs are a necessary component of all sentences. Students will begin identifying helping verbs towards the end of the week. A helping verb determines the mood or tense of another verb in a phrase. In the sentence "It will rain tonight," for example, the verb will "helps" the verb rain by pointing to the future. Helping verbs are words such as  be, have, do, can, could, may, must, should, will, and would.

Students will receive their spelling sort this week.  Students may practice these words during Word Work as well as homework.  Students are responsible for correct spelling and knowing their word patterns.

How We Express Ourselves:  Students will inquire about visual aids as we explore Line 2, Public Speaking.  Students will create visual posters to accompany presentations.

How We Express Ourselves:  Students will continue inquiring about Public Speaking as they learn tools and tricks to become good listeners to public speakers.  
Wednesday
How We Express Ourselves: Students will begin to explore Line 3, Written Expression.  For today, students will watch a video on the written voice and determine the voice of two different stories.
Thursday
How We Express Ourselves:  Students will receive an emotion/feeling to express through writing. Students will write a short paragraph that helps to convey this feeling without using the word in their writing.
Friday
How We Express Ourselves: Students will work in groups to explore picture books.  Students will determine the feelings and actions of characters in order to determine the author’s written expression.

Daily 5/CAFE:  This week, we will wrap our work on characterization and character traits.  Students were able to classify and identify characters in a story based on their actions within the text.  We will introduce the CAFE comprehension strategy of Determine and Analyze the Author’s Purpose.  Readers will become aware of why texts are written (to inform, persuade, and entertain).   During student conferences this week, teachers will work with students to identify the author’s purpose.

VOICES: Students will continue the 6+1 Traits of Writing. This is referred to as VOICES: voice, organization, ideas, conventions, expanded vocabulary, and sentence fluency. This week we will continue to practice the sentence fluency trait and voice trait.  The sentence fluency trait includes how to create a variety of sentences that can be read smoothly and rhythmically. It can be a challenge to come up with sentences of different lengths, beginning in different ways, and that also have a pleasing sound. The voice trait focused on how to express yourself using emotions that fit the purpose for writing. Students will try out new ways of expressing themselves in order to actively engage the reader.We will be begin using dialogue to help give the characters a voice. Students will also being using words to replace “said” in their writing that help to express emotion.
