WELCOME BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!


August 17th-21st

Program of Inquiry
Central Idea: Who We Are
Family  heritage and heredity influence who we are as individuals.  

Lines of Inquiry:
  • How traits are inherited
  • Investigating genealogy
  • How heritage affects our lives
Teacher Questions:
  • What can genealogy teach us about ourselves?
  • How does family heritage influence our behavior?
  • What can the heritage of others teach us?


Daily 5/CAFE
Reading: Daily 5/ CAFE
  • Daily 5: Students will begin to rebuild their reading stamina.
  • Words Their Way-  Students will take a spelling inventory.
  • CAFE:  This week students will focus on Reading to Self.  We will discuss 3 ways to read a book, create essential agreements when reading to self, as well as learning how to choose IPICK Good Fit books.  
  • Vocabulary: Wordly Wise instruction will begin next week.
  • 4th graders:
  • 3rd grade:
Writing: VOICES
  • VOICES: Students will begin a review of the 6+1 Traits of Writing. This is referred to as VOICES: voice, organization, ideas, conventions, expanded vocabulary, and sentence fluency. We will be pre-reading to find the big idea!
  • Grammar: Students will review parts of speech and take a preassessment.

  • Handwriting: All students will provide a handwriting sample and begin reviewing and practicing cursive.




3rd Grade Math
Monday
Students will complete an addition and subtraction timed quiz in order to gain a baseline for instruction.  Students will complete the beginning of year math assessment.
Tuesday
Students will review types and uses of numbers using the number grid.
Wednesday
Students will be introduced to the Student Reference Book and establish essential agreements for the math classroom.
Thursday
Students will review telling time, measuring length, and calculator usage.
Friday
Students will review data concepts, gather, analyze, and display data in a variety of ways.



4th Grade Math
Monday
Students will complete a multiplication and division timed quiz in order to gain a baseline for instruction.  Students will also complete the Beginning of Year math assessment.
Tuesday
Students will be introduced to the Student Reference Book and will establish essential agreements for the math classroom.
Wednesday
Students will be introduced to tools used in geometry, review points, lines, line segments, and rays.  Additionally, they will explore collinear points.  
Thursday
Students will practice constructing angles, triangles, quadrangles, as well as classify quadrangles.  
Friday
Students will work with parallelograms.  Students will classify quadrangles based on their properties.
