Week of August 31-September 4


Program of Inquiry
Central Idea: Who We Are
Family  heritage and heredity influence who we are as individuals.

Daily 5/CAFE
Reading: Daily 5/ CAFE
Over the next few weeks, we will begin individual reading and writing conferences with students.

  • Vocabulary: Students that are new to Chavura will be introduced to Quizlet this week. This is an online study aid to help make vocabulary a bit more fun!
  • 4th graders:  Students will continue Lesson 12 in Book 3.  Unit 12 test this week.
  • 3rd grade: Students will continue Lesson 1 in Book 3.  Unit 1 test this week.
Writing: VOICES
  • VOICES: Students will begin a review of the 6+1 Traits of Writing. This is referred to as VOICES: voice, organization, ideas, conventions, expanded vocabulary, and sentence fluency. We will continue with the Ideas trait. We will read The Hickory Chair, which will lead us into a discussion and activity about details. Students will learn how to make ideas strong in their writing by focusing on the meaning and development of their story. Students will also learn to give their readers details, and understand how to include them.

  • Grammar: Students will continue to practice changing singular nouns into plural nouns. Students will begin practicing with irregular nouns toward the end of the week. The class will begin collecting irregular nouns to share with the class.

  • Handwriting: Third grade will review upper and lower case D’Nealian manuscript to help them prepare for cursive. Fourth grade will review the formation of lower case letters in cursive. Fourth grade students are expected to write in cursive on all assignments unless otherwise indicated.

  • Words Their Way Spelling:
Students should continue practicing their spelling words at home.  Students are responsible for spelling and sorting their words correctly.  This is the second week practicing these words.  Students will have their spelling test this Friday!  As a reminder, 3 spelling homework jobs are due each Friday.




3rd Grade Math

Students will solve problems using money.  Students will determine situations in which an exact answer or estimate is needed.
Tuesday
Students will explore number patterns.
Wednesday
Students will review telling time and find elapsed time.
Thursday
Students will complete Unit 1 Review and Test.
Friday
Students will complete Unit 1 Review and Test.  If time allows, students will play math games related to Unit 1.



4th Grade Math

Students will review and discuss various ways numbers are used.
Tuesday
Students will explore equivalent names for whole numbers and complete name collection boxes.
Wednesday
Students will practice identifying values of digits in numbers up to one billion.
Thursday
Students will practice place value skills using a calculator.
Friday
Students will organize and display data using a tally chart and will identify the maximum, minimum, range, and mode.



Science/Social Studies
Monday
Who We Are:  Students will participate in the Frankenfish activity. Students will use dominant and recessive traits to create their own fish.
Tuesday
Who We Are:  Students will continue the Frankenfish activity.
Wednesday
Who We Are:Students will complete the the Frankenfish activity. With a partner, students will use Punnett Squares to cross their fish with another and show inherited traits.
Thursday
Who We Are:   “What’s in a name?” Students will research the origin and meanings of their names.
Friday
Who We Are:  Based on a class survey, we will do further their investigations and gathering information about the places their names originated from.

  • Words Their Way Spelling:
We will begin our spelling words this week.  Based on a pre-assessment inventory, students are placed in leveled groups based on their spelling needs.  Students will be given 24 words to practice/study for two weeks.  A spelling test will be given every other Friday.  Students are responsible for completing 3 weekly spelling jobs for homework that will be due each Friday.




3rd Grade Math

Students will review the idea that there are many names for a number.
Tuesday
Students will be introduced the vocabulary of chance.
Wednesday
Students will identify number-grid patterns and use them to find differences between pairs of numbers.
Thursday
Students will review calculator skills with adding, subtracting, and skip counting.  Students will also practice place-value skills.
Friday
Students will review money amounts with coins.  Students will write dollars-and-cents notation and compare money amounts.



4th Grade Math

Students will identify properties of polygons, distinguish between convex and concave, as well as explore and classify geometric figures.
Tuesday
Students will practice drawing circles with a compass.
Wednesday
Students will  explore designing with circles.
Thursday
Students will construct hexagons and triangles using a compass and straightedge.
Friday
Students will be assessed on Unit 1 objectives.



Science/Social Studies
Monday
Who We Are:  Unit provocation.  Students will be introduced to our first Unit of Inquiry, Who We Are.  Throughout this unit, students will inquire how family  heritage and heredity influence who we are as individuals.  Today, our students will complete a pre-assessment for the unit.  We will read two books aloud to peak their interest about the central idea, as well as complete a vocabulary matching game.
Tuesday
Who We Are:  Students will create a chart comparing physical and nonphysical traits.
Wednesday
Who We Are:  Students will inquire about DNA and genetics.  Students will explore the similarities and differences between DNA and genetics.  Students will complete (at home) an inherited traits interview.  We will review the class results in class.
Thursday
Who We Are:  Students will create a class inventory of dominant and recessive traits using the inventory collected with the at-home survey.
Friday
Who We Are:  Students will complete a “Frankenfish” activity.  Students will create a visual representation of dominant and recessive traits.

Reading: Daily 5/ CAFE
  • Daily 5: Students will begin to rebuild their reading stamina.
  • Words Their Way-  Students will take a spelling inventory.
  • CAFE:  This week students will focus on Reading to Self.  We will discuss 3 ways to read a book, create essential agreements when reading to self, as well as learning how to choose IPICK Good Fit books.  
  • Vocabulary: Wordly Wise instruction will begin next week.
  • 4th graders:
  • 3rd grade:
Writing: VOICES
  • VOICES: Students will begin a review of the 6+1 Traits of Writing. This is referred to as VOICES: voice, organization, ideas, conventions, expanded vocabulary, and sentence fluency. We will be pre-reading to find the big idea!
  • Grammar: Students will review parts of speech and take a preassessment.

  • Handwriting: All students will provide a handwriting sample and begin reviewing and practicing cursive.




3rd Grade Math
Monday
Students will complete an addition and subtraction timed quiz in order to gain a baseline for instruction.  Students will complete the beginning of year math assessment.
Tuesday
Students will review types and uses of numbers using the number grid.
Wednesday
Students will be introduced to the Student Reference Book and establish essential agreements for the math classroom.
Thursday
Students will review telling time, measuring length, and calculator usage.
Friday
Students will review data concepts, gather, analyze, and display data in a variety of ways.



4th Grade Math
Monday
Students will complete a multiplication and division timed quiz in order to gain a baseline for instruction.  Students will also complete the Beginning of Year math assessment.
Tuesday
Students will be introduced to the Student Reference Book and will establish essential agreements for the math classroom.
Wednesday
Students will be introduced to tools used in geometry, review points, lines, line segments, and rays.  Additionally, they will explore collinear points.  
Thursday
Students will practice constructing angles, triangles, quadrangles, as well as classify quadrangles.  
Friday
Students will work with parallelograms.  Students will classify quadrangles based on their properties.
